Mature Thoughts

Raina was wishing she’d done her laundry earlier in the week. Or even yesterday morning before she went to Cody’s. Now she’d have to go to her parents in what she was thinking might be somewhat like the walk of shame.

No. No. That was wrong to feel that way. To even think that way.

There was nothing shameful in what she had with Cody. With what they did last night and shared with their conversation this morning.

Her parents knew she wasn’t a virgin. It’s just they never knew when she spent the night with a man before. Not coming home last night told them the activity she’d been participating in.

The minute her father’s car pulled away, she grabbed her laundry and went down the stairs and to her parents’ house.

“I figured you’d show up when he left,” her mother said.

“Did you tell him to leave so that we could talk?” she asked.

“I might have sent him to the store,” her mother said.

“You could have come to see me.”

“I could have but wanted to see if you would come to do your laundry like you always do.”

“I’m here,” she said, moving toward the laundry room and putting her clothes in, thankful her parents had heavy duty machines and she could do two massive loads rather than several small ones.

“How was your night?”

“It was good,” she said, grinning.

When her mother sighed, her grin got bigger. She was just playing, but felt her mother should ask her directly what was on her mind. “Your father is worried.”

“There is no reason for him to be. I thought he liked Cody. I thought you did too.”

“We did from that one meeting. From what you say about him. I’m going to assume this is the first time you’ve slept with him? Or just the first time you spent the night.”

“Both,” she said. “The first time I spent the full night with any man.”

“And you didn’t sleep well?” her mother asked. “Or was there another reason for the bags under your eyes?”

“Don’t you ask me if I’ve got regrets too.”

“So Cody thought you did?” her mother asked, following her out of the laundry room and into the kitchen. She grabbed a coffee cup and went to turn the Keurig on. She needed another hit of caffeine in the worst way.

“He brought it up. He thought that was why I didn’t sleep well, but it had more to do with not being comfortable with someone next to me in bed. And that it’s hard to get comfortable in another bed right away.”

“It is,” her mother agreed. “Were you upset he asked if you had regrets?”

“I was slightly annoyed. I mean he was holding back more than me. I wanted to have sex two weeks ago.”

“Really? Why was he holding back?”

“Because he wanted me to be sure. I asked him that too. I worried if he thought I was dirty or something.”

“He wouldn’t think that,” her mother said.

“I know. I didn’t think he would, but I wouldn’t know for sure unless I asked.
